I'm trying very hard to trace this Campbell family back to Scotland and keep hitting dead ends and conflicting documents and stories. John (Archibald) Campbell actually states in his will that he was born in Muff Londonbury Ireland and he calls Scott Campbell his "Friend" even though Scott would been about 9 years old in his will.

A little update: Archibald Campbell who went as John Campbell is assumed to be Scott's dad everywhere I look. He signed his will Archibald Campbell but called himself John Campbell. There's no trace of him being called Colin, and in his will he calls John and Jeremiah his sons, and calls Scott, Duncan and Colin his "friends." This is making me thing that Scott's dad was a different person named Colin who must have been dead. Maybe Colin and John (Archibald) were brothers or cousins? It's all very confusing.

Scott Campbell's actual first name was Antoine. I used to be a bit confused about who his father might have been but now I feel pretty confident that it was John Campbell, the Indian Agent. link www.biographi.ca/en/bio/campbell_john_1731_95_4E.htmlIt is important to note that Antoine was born of an Indian woman, one of the things that gave him such a close connection to the Dakota and so proficient in their language and other Indian dialects--as well as French. This page has some good info about Scott and even helpful footnotes: link

Am related to the Campbells thru Nancy and John Palmer Bourke. I believe his will descibes his attitude toward native americans. He considered his children from his white wife - his. His children from native women something lower. Basically, he did not provide for his "metis" children in his will.

That is too bad but not atypical. I know of quite a number of white men at that time who completely abandoned their families with native wives when they found a white girl willing to marry them. And when I say "girl" that was exactly what they looked for--some 13 or 14 year old. Nothing unusual there at all and nobody thought anything of it. I know of a trader who abandoned Indian or half Indian wives in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, only to make a more advantageous match in yet another town.
