I'm trying to establish his Native ancestry. He is enumerated twice on the Birch Cooley rolls. No father is listed in either census. His mother is listed in both; as a Mdewakanton in 1897 and a White Woman in 1898. The "white" annotation was done likewise for other male spouses who were caucasian.
Transcriptions:
1897 Census of the Medawakanton Sioux Indians of Birch Cooley Agency, Minnesota taken by Robert B. Henton, United States Indian Agent, June 30th, 1897
No. 656, Pheby Rocque, Female, Single, Age 23
No. 657, Frank Rocque, Male, Single, Age 25
No. 658, Lyda Rocque, Female, Mother, Age 20
No. 659, Agnes, Female, Daughter, Age 9
No. 660, Leo, Male, Son, Age 7
1898 Census of the Medawakanton Sioux Indians of Birch Cooley Agency, Minnesota taken by Robert B. Henton, United States Indian Agent, during June 1898
No. 648, Pheby Rocque, Female, Single, Age 23
No. 649, Frank Rocque, Male, Single, Age 25
No. ***, Lyda Rocque [WHITE is written beside her name], Female, Mother, Age not listed
No. 650, Agnes, Female, Daughter, Age 10
No. 651, Leo, Male, Son, Age 8

Leo Francis Rocque's marriage record is the only source I could find that states his father's name which is listed as "Antwine Roque."
Transcription:
January 24, 1918 Marriage record, County of Isabella, State of Michigan
Leo Francis Roque, 28 year old Indian born in Wabasha, Mn, living in Mt. Pleasant, MI, occupation Clerk. Parents: Antwine Roque & Lydia Thompson
Julie Judd Smith, 29 year old Indian, born in Norwalk, Conn., living in Mt. Pleasant, MI, occupation Nurse. Parents: Charles M. Smith & Julie Judd
Married January 26, 1918, Mt. Pleasant, MI by Joseph H. Green, Minister.
[Also, in their daughter Emily Judd Rocque Coash's Find A Grave biography it states "Emily was part Sioux Indian via her father."]
The only "Antwine Roque" I can find in Wabasha County, MN for that time is "Antwine La Rocque."
His biography appears on pages 260-261 in the History of Wabasha County 1920, which states he was born in Canada 18 Feb 1841. It goes on to say: Antwine married in Canada on 4 Nov 1865 to Catharine Blaney. That union produced nine children all born between 1866 - 1882. In 1882 he came with his family to Wabasha settling in the Plainview township.
[There is no indication that he has any Native ancestry.]
In the later Pipestone Indian census rolls, Leo Francis Rocque is listed as 1/4 Mdewakanton blood. So there must have been another Antwine or Antoine Rocque in Wabasha during that time who was a halfbreed.
Hoping someone can shed some light on this mystery. Thank you.
